I just added an Adaptec camera card reader with 4 different card ports.
Ports were each assigned different drive letters.

The 1st problem is this Adaptec install was done without consideration for
existing drive assignments. Some existing drives were obliterated as a
result. It was difficult to find which drives were displaced.

The 2nd problem is that browsing My Computer started hanging until I
unistalled Adaptec. Can too many drives to this?

QUESTION: How can existing drive assignments be protected from being
displaced by this Adaptec install routine?

Thanks for feedback but thats obvious and not too helpful. I asked...

"How can existing drive assignments be protected from being
displaced by this Adaptec install routine?"

Are these existing drives physical disk drives or partitions or some type
or removables ? Likely, the Adaptec software is keying off the last letter
of Physical drives and continuing the lettering from that point. It may be
easier to just re-assign the Adaptec Card Reader letters to mid-Alphabet
and it will leave alone your existing drive lettering.

Hello,

The existing drives are a combination of 4 mapped network folders, another
hard disk and a couple of dvd drives.

The problem with doing this post-install is that it is very difficult to
reassign the resulting drives. Following install and new drive
reassignments (and disappearances), you cannot tell which drive or map was
which. The text descriptions and icons are lost.

Can't Windows xp (pro btw) prevent Adaptec from altering existing drive
assignments? Thanks for your help with this.

Sounds like a pretty "mangled" initial drive letter lineup from the
start point. Label your network drives Z->A, allow the Local drives to
start with A and go toward Z. If you start hop scotching the letters
willy nilly you get to straighten the mess out yourself.

Ok Bob. You have done it! You uncovered the void in my understanding.

I had no idea as to the cause. It never occured to me that if I assigned
drives sequentially, subsequent additions would not conflict existing
drives. If I skipped one in my assignments, then the Adaptec install would
find it, use it and then overwrite the subsequent one.

Thanks for help clarifying this. : - )

Glad to hear all is well, have a good day!
