msystems udoc replacement

I tried to use Sandisk uSSD 5000 flash drive to replace the msystems udoc
drive I am using for my exiting XPe image but I cannot get it to work. The
boot kit for Windows that I downloaded for the device requires a Windows XP
installation CD to prepare the drive to boot XP image. I am wondering if
anyone knows of any usb flash drive very similar to the udoc. I need a 2 GB
or more and one that can be partitioned.

thanks.

Hi,
I have tried Intel Value SSD, it has USB 2.0 i/f that fits in the MB USB
strip.
It's very fast and is seen from XP as a fixed disk.
This device may be setup with Diskpart ( sel disk, clean, create
partition, assign, then format and again diskpart to make the partition
active)
The image should have USB 2.0 boot component.
I also have tried Sundisk cruzer Titanium usb sticks following setup
instruction in XPE help with success.

Hi,

Thanks for the info. I did try the Intel Value SSD (Z-U130). My image had
USB 2.0 boot component and it's the original image that runs on an MSystems
uDOC. When I try to boot from it, here is the message I am getting when the
BIOS tries to boot from it:

"Attempting to boot a USB Hard Drive....
Pen Drive Without Operating System. Remove Pen Drive and Reboot. No Boot
present. Halting."

I partitioned the drive using XP Disk Management. Assigned the partition
active and formatted it NTFS just like my existing uDOC drive.
My BIOS version is Insyde ACPI BIOS Version 1.50.00.

I don't understand why it's being seen as a pen drive not a fixed drive. Do
you know if the error I am getting is coming from the nt loader or the BIOS?

thanks,
Ev

Hi Rafaelle,

Diskpart solved my problem. I never used it before and I have been using
Disk management utility to partition and format my uDocs. Right Intel Value
SSD is faster than the Sandisk SSD.

Thanks a lot for the info.

Ev,
glad you succed, Diskpart command CLEAN is the key, utilities ( both
Diskpart and Disk management) keep the original device's MBR unless the disk
gets erased.
If erased, when the new partition is created, a new disk structure is done.
This is the key solutions to many boot failures. The other one is to format
on the target device and not elsewere.

Hi,
I tried loading XPE on intel value SSD. I succeeded once. But after that, I always get an error saying DISK BOOT FAILURE, REPLACE DISK AND REBOOT.
The SSD is not detected as a removable disk and hence I cannot format it using ufdprep. I therefore format it under disk management using NTFS format and copy the image onto the SSD. Can you tell me what I am missing or provide me a step by step procedure?

Thanks in advance.

I suppose you connect your SSD to the ATA/IDE port, right? Make sure
- it is connected to the primary port
- the partition is marked as active
- you have the correct arc path (i.e.
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS)

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. It is a USB header based SSD. I have enabled 'Boot
from USB' in BIOS and marked the partition as active. The arc path is also
active. Is there anything else I am missing?

You may check some other BIOS settings also. Look for the drive
emulation (USB-FDD, USB-HDD ...) of the the USB drive and try various
settings. AFAIK, if the drive is connected to USB it needs to show up as
removable so you can use ufdprep or you will not be able to boot XPe
from it.
Anyhow, if you connect the USB-SSD ti you desktop, it will show up as a
removable drive and you should be able to run ufdprep.
