msvercnfg.exe at 99% cpu utilization

Windows 2000 5.00.2198 installed on my PC.
On numerous occasions, msvercnfg.exe consumes 98 - 99% of
the cpu. Identified as an application within
c:\winnt\system32 I've done microsoft and internet
searches and can't find any information on this module.
Any help appreciated.

Try running Adaware from www.lavasoft.de and as Dave said, update your
virus definitions. I'd assume its a rogue program of some sort.
