I have just recovered from a crash which I caused myself.

Roxio 7 has started playing up and reporting that there has been a problem
with MSVCRT.dll. So I found a site giving it away, and replaced the version
in the system32 dir. XP nagged me not to do it, but what does the OS know
anyway, and I was replacing a faulty file.

So go to reboot, and BLUE SCREEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Safe mode..........JUST HANGS!!!!!!!!!

Well I pulled the hard drive and fitted it into another PC and replaced the
new file with the old one I had cunningly renamed.

My question is could I have done the change without having to pull the hard
drive?

I recommend to run a thorough scan for Viruses and Malwares on your
computer, then Run Disk Clean up.
Opena Run command and type in:
sfc /scannow click [OK] and let it run.
If you still you need to know what application causing this by looking in
the Event Viewer for Error messages (X) and dpouble click them to get more
Info about the culprit causing this Error.
HTH.
