Hi again,
Since I first posted this problem, I've emailed MSN support, but got a
canned response back to check some things. They were in order.
What I see is "error on page" when loading MSN Video. The details show
"object expected" and also "playlist undefined" or "player control
undefined". I've reinstalled Media Player, which was one of the things to
do. I have run Spybot and Adaware and I am running Norton SystemWorks and
Norton Personal Firewall with popups and ad blocking disabled.
Anybody have any problems like this. It use to be ok until about 2 or 3
weeks ago.
Thanks,
John

That MSN Video never worked correctly. I just downloaded it again. I do this
every few months in case their is a newer version. Tried it and it was
worse than the last time.
I don't get error messages but it has a tendency to just hang and has to be
aborted. Also this last time it dragged down the computer so bad I had to
get rid of it. Just the uninstall put my computer back to normal response.

I used Spybot, Adaware, PestPatrol, Hijack This and Bazooka Scanner and none
found anything. Also have Norton running.

Frank,
Well, I got it working. It's caused by Norton. Early on, I tried
disabling the Personal Firewall, but it didn't do anything for me. I ran
"msconfig" and unchecked the three Symantec items and rebooted. It worked
fine. Then I rechecked them one at a time and rebooted. The last one I
checked was the "ccApp" one that actually loads the program Norton System
Works and Personal Firewall. Then I disabled NPF and the MSN Video started
working. I can even reenable it after it first starts and it continues to
work. You might find success here. Also, in the support email I got back
from Microsoft, it mentioned opening Port 80 for streaming video. I haven't
tried that yet, but I'm going to.
Hope this helps. Let me know.

OK. I'll try it.

got things

I've tried everything including calling Qwest, who is my DSL provider.
(I've got 1.5 Mbps xDSL through them and MSN premium.) I was told by a
person at my work that there's a firewall built-in to my modem and
that it blocks MSN video. I want to know if this is true, because if
it is true how come I can get streaming video through other sites. So
does MSN have a screw loose or something?

Fellow frustrated MSN Video Users:

I have the solution. MSN Support was no great help. They provided me with a stock response to check my computer setup . . . didn't help.

The problem is Norton Internet Security (NIS) program. To get MSN Video to work properly you must disconnect NIS. First, right-click the NIS icon to bring up program selections. Within the NIS program there is an "options" selection that you can select to set up the program. After selecting "options" select the option to "manually" start NIS and not have it started when the computer boots up and places an icon in the Task Bar. After making this change re-boot your computer. MSN Video should now operate normally.

Me personally, I use a program Ad-Subtract Pro to do all my pop-up, ad, cookie, etc. filtering. AND I make sure that the Firewall provided by Microsoft XP is enabled and all the critical security updates have been made.

If you want to enable NIS, right-click NIS icon in task bar, select Security and enable that choice and NIS is then up and running. Be aware that when you enable NIS, MSN Video will not work properly. Chances are it will hang.
