MSN Messenger7 and Recieving Files with XP2 Firewall

D

Donald Bock

Hi, John:

I have MSN Messenger7 and am using WinXP2 built-in
firewall. I have a Westell 2200 Ethernet Modem with
NAT Router (internal). My Westell Config list shows
Messenger on the list of apps to port through. I have
a slow speed for *Send File* option. Requst:

Step-by-Step for opening a using ports in Messenger.

When I first run Messenger and UNBLOCK in WinXP2
firewall, does it negotiate port use, or do I need
to open manually by setting exceptions? The panel of
OPTIOMS->CONNECTION shows: "You are connected to the
Internet through a non-UPnP IP restricted NAT. The
Windows Firewall is enabled.

Thanks, Donald

Greetings,

I'm sure that info in the Westell router is out of date, they all are.

Using file transfer in MSN Messenger does't require any ports to be opened or forwarded to at
least work, it's capable of sending the file directly through the Messenger server -- if
you're able to connect and talk, you're able to at least send files (albeit slowly).

If you're having trouble receiving a file in this case, the problem is on the contacts who is
trying to send you a file.
