MSN Messenger 7.5 --> Windows Live Messenger 8.0 Question

K

Kristan Kenney

I've got a few people asking me whether or not users of MSN Messenger 7.5
will be "pushed" to Windows Live Messenger 8.0 (via the "A new version of
Messenger is available" toast), or if they'll be able to stick with their
MSN Messenger 7.5 client.

I haven't heard much regarding this and what I have heard could be summed up
to be a bit confusing, so I'm just looking on some clarification.

Thanks in advance and have a great day! :)

I dont think your right Jonathan Kay, because of the compatibilty issues
that WLM wont work on Windows 9x, they will not be forced to upgrade.

I think this was covered in the beta chat

But i might be wrong.

Hi,

When you sign into Messenger, it sends your operating system as part of the request.

This is why Windows 95 and Windows NT clients don't get prompts to upgrade to MSN Messenger 6
(from 5) as it is unsupported on their operating systems.

It is the same thing for this, it will know you're using Windows XP and make the proper
prompt.

When you're asking in the beta chat, most of the answers you're getting are from high level
program managers which may not be aware of all the technical aspects. They can and have been
wrong in the past.

Actually, it wouldn't matter because they dropped support for WIndows 98 and
ME today :(
Windows 95 and below has been unsupported for a few years now so they
probably wouldn't bother with those...
