I had 7.0 and it worked fine, when i updated to 7.5 every time i try to sign
in now i get the error "Messenger has encountered a problem and needs to
close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." if i click on send error report
a window displays saying
"Microsoft security worm/virus alert

Thank you for submitting an error report.

Problem description

The error was likely caused by:

Win32/Small.CA"

however when I use the service to scan my computer no worm is found, not
with microsoft's pc scan thing or my anti-virus or anti-spyware software.
Please help me messenger closes whenever I try to sign in.

Exactly the same thing is happening to me as well. I have absolutely no idea
why it's happening and it hasn't ever happened before. I cannot use MSN 7.5
or the new Windows Live Messenger which I have recently downloaded for the
same reason. Can anyone help? This problem is extremely frustrating.

I am using live messenger now too, but for some reason it works. I have no
idea why, I did full virus scans and spyware scans and removed some infected
files but I had tryed that before and it didnt work.. sorry I cant help

I'm getting the same thing. The error report shows the virus/spyware as
being called: Win32/Small.CA

Norton doesn't seem to detect it, neither does Ad-aware. Nothing on either
of their sites have an info on how to get rid of it.

This problem is very frustrating, I agree. I also think the person that
wrote this code is an idiot.

Glad I'm not the only one having this irritation.

Hey. Have you by any chance just upgraded your virus/internet security
software? I have solved my problem, by rather unfortunately realising that
my new Trend Micro 2006 Internet Security was what was blocking msn. I am
still trying to navigate to the place where you can select certain programs
that it won't block using its firewall but I haven't found it yet. All
versions of MSN will work for me though if I shut down the program. I will
hopefully find a better solution soon as it isn't the best thing to have your
virus software and firewall off when on the net. Anyway, I hope that i've
helped you. I was very annoyed when it happened to me.

Either this virus or another turns off my firewall, and won't let me turn it
back on (I'm using the Windows firewall at the mo). I have no firewall, no
anti-virus that works, and no Messenger. I'm stuck for ideas.

Thanks a lot for the tip though, much appreciated.

Dear all i had the problem and i removed it, it is some for of spy
ware
first of all check if u have any of these files, if u do then voila u
know wuts da problem.
the files are ibm00001.exe ibm00001.dll and ibm00002.dll, they are
located in program files\common files\microsoft shared\web folders
if u do find them , u have to restart in safe mode command prompt only
, IMPORTANT u CANNNOT delete it from safe mode!!!!!! chose safe mode
command prompt , then navigate to the folders specyfied by using the
"cd" command and finally delete the three damm files, but wait it aint
over yet, also while ur still in command prompt, run regedit and search
for ibm0, u will get two entries, one in the rin section of hkey current
user, named shell , and pointing to the ibm file the second time u find
it u might be surprised that it points at explorer.exe , dont let it
fool u, double click it, u will see the ibm , push home u get explorer
press end, u get ibm ( well they kind of attahed it to exploirer to the
end after adding way tooo many spaces so u wont notice, so make sure
nothing is there expcept "explorer.exe" again be sure NOTHING except
explorer is there. finally , now use shutdown -r to restart ur pc,
viola it works again, :D::D:D:D:D:D oh btw i know i might be very
verbose, so feel free to ask me questions or rephrase it u want.
:D:D:D:

cheers,
mahed
