I have messenger disabled. It has never been enabled on this computer. Yet, I still see a process named msmsgs.exe running on Task Manager using about 8 MB. I've been told that this is Windows Messenger. How can it be running if it is disabled?
It's a group policy setting. - Run gpedit.msc. - Navigate to the following tree node: Local Computer Policy Computer Configuration Windows Settings Administrative Templates Windows Messenger Enable both of the "Do not ..." options (i.e., enable the disables). This only disables Windows Messenger from getting loaded. Its files are still around but don't take up much space. How to Prevent Windows Messenger from Running on a Windows XP-Based Computer
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=302089 I just recently asked about the same problem. You can see the thread at

Hello,
I'm having the same problem; however, I apparently don't have gpedit.msc . I did disable it in services.msc and I disabled it from starting within the program itself, but it still starts every time the computer reboots. Also, it is not shown in my startup in msconfig.
Thanks,
Steve
Hello,
I found the problem. Norton started it.
