I have messenger disabled. It has never been enabled on this computer.
Yet, I still see a process named msmsgs.exe running on Task Manager using
about 8 MB. I've been told that this is Windows Messenger. How can it be
running if it is disabled?

It has obviously NOT been disabled
Start/Run/type MSCONFIG and click Ente
Click the Startup tab and uncheck msmsg
Click Apply and then OK - in that orde
Reboot

It's a group policy setting.

- Run gpedit.msc.
- Navigate to the following tree node:
Local Computer Policy
Computer Configuration
Windows Settings
Administrative Templates
Windows Messenger

Enable both of the "Do not ..." options (i.e., enable the disables). This
only disables Windows Messenger from getting loaded. Its files are still
around but don't take up much space.

I just recently asked about the same problem. You can see the thread at
(or in Google Groups at
http://snipurl.com/4gvp) where there are some links on how to uninstall
Windows Messenger.

Thanks, Vanguard. I enabled the disabling of both. On another thread I got
a tip that it was Norton AntiVirus that was starting it so I disabled it
there too.

Norton antivirus is indeed the culprit. The good news is that, Win XP the fix is to simply go into the preferences for Norton Anti-Virus and uncheck the instant messaging protection for MSN instant messaging. Once I did this, msmgs.exe did not run. This does assume that you have unchecked the preference within Messenger to run at start-up. Good Luck!

A thousand thanks. No one else seemed able to understand what I was asking,
or to identify the solution.
I now find that msmsgs.exe ONLY runs when Windows Messenger is
running--which is very rarely.

Hello,

I'm having the same problem; however, I apparently don't have gpedit.msc .  I did disable it in services.msc and I disabled it from starting within the program itself, but it still starts every time the computer reboots.  Also, it is not shown in my startup in msconfig.

Thanks,

Steve

Hello,

I found the problem.  Norton started it.

Since the original message isn't attached, I don't know what the
question was, but msmsgs.exe IS Windows Messenger! Also, I have Norton
set up to protect MSN/Windows Messenger and have not had a problem.
