Need information on obtaining patch re:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;831938&Product=winxp

OEM version of WinXP Pro - Dell Support has me in Bombay
Limbo, since the warranty on the system has elapsed,
however they generously offer help in reinstalling my
operating system, regardless of the fact that I've
informed them that this does not resolve the issue. MS
Support refers me to...you guessed it...Dell Bombay.

Article addresses availability of patch specifically
relating to this problem, but I haven't found it yet. If
anyone knows where I can find it, I'd appreciate any help.

You must call Microsoft and request the patch for KB831938

As indicated in the article: In special cases, charges
that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be
canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines
that a specific update will resolve your problem. The
usual support costs will apply to additional support
questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific
update in question...

Just make sure not to ask about anything else that the
file and they won't charge you! I've don it many times
so you shouldn't worry.

They'll e-mail you the fix along with a password to open
the file...

Best of luck

Got through to MS. They sent me 2 files in an e-mail,
with no installation instructions, etc. Belarc Advisor
says the patch related to 831938 is now installed, so I
imagine that just guessing at what to do with them
worked. Explorer hasn't crashed since installation, but
it still hangs like heck, every time the aforementioned
folders are worked with. Quality marches on. :-þ
