MSI leftovers?

L

Luigi M Bianchi

I am running w2k pro workstation SP4. I have been using Sun Java for many
years. Recently I noticed that the entire installer packages for the last
few versions of Sun j2sdk and JRE are still present under Documents and
Settings > [user] > Local Settings > Application Data, even though I
successfully uninstalled each old version before successfully installing a
new one. The letftovers are in directories named, e.g., {7148f0a6-6813-
11d6-a77b-00b0d0142050}, which usually include two files, e.g. 1033.MST
and "Java 2 SDK, SE v1.4.2_02.msi". Question: can these directories, or
the files therein, be deleted without ill effects? Thnaks for your help.

It's interesting that you should ask about this just now. I had just
noticed the same thing, except that I have only one such folder, probably
because I had installed only one previous version of Sun Java. I've just
copied the folder to another drive and deleted the original copy. So far
it has made no difference that I can detect, aside from freeing almost 10
megabytes of disk space.

Thank you. I followed your method. I will keep the files, so
backed up, until I install the next version of j2sdk/jre successfully.

I've experienced no problem so far, I don't expect one since the files are
related to a previous version. The install package for the JRE doesn't
remove previous versions, so I had to initiate that myself. Since I
uninstalled v1.4.2_05 after installing v1.4.2_06, the installer may have
lost track of thesae files.

I doubt it: where would it get them from? The files I was taking
about are the full .msi installers (40-60MB).

Incidentally, I found more of these relics in \winnt\Downloaded
Installations\. It seems that now all msi installer files are preserved
somewhere on the system. Does anybody know of a way to prevent this?

Yes. But I think the scheduler will put them back in.

I think I would know if a 50MB file is being downloaded to my
machine: I use a 56k dialup modem.

I suspect the problem started after applying SP4.

They come from the Internet.

Nope. I have SP2 and I have it also. I believe it comes from the scheduler or it gets put in there when
we install the Sun J2SDK.
