msi deploy via GP - Upgrades tab

Hello,

I have a package deployed via Group Policy Software Distribution.
Now I received a new package that upgrades the old one.
What I notice is that when I add the new package to the Software
Distribution GP, the wizard automatically fills-in the Upgrades tab
with the old package (I just wanted to remove the old one and add the
new one).
Does that mean the new package it's just an upgrade and needs the old
msi for installing ?

Not too sure about how to proceed.

Thanks

I believe that that means that the new package *can* upgrade the previously
deployed one. That does not mean it has to.

Yes, that relationship is implied based on the MSI package. I think that it
is a hard-coded somewhere in the package indicating the upgrade relationship
and so it is not giving you the option to remove. I don't know off the top
of my head where that is in the package. You could try modifying the
packageRegistration object in AD that represents the package, but I haven't
tested the outcome of that. One thing you could also try is to simply add
the new package to a different GPO. I wonder if that upgrade relationship
would be forced in that case.
