My notebook is displaying this message on boot. I have read several
corrective actions that tell me to rename msgina.dll and restore using the
recovery console but it will not allow me to rename, delete or anything else.
The DIR entry shows up but any activity says that the file is not found.

I have attempted to Repair from the XP Install CD and recieve the message
that msgina.dll cannot be copied. I then tried a complete reinstall and
received the same message.

Is there any way I can get rid of the file or at least copy over it? I
really do not want to reimage the disk.

Thanks in advace for any help.

e.g:

Part 1: Restore your computer to a working state
To restore your computer to a working state, follow these steps:1. When you
receive the error message that is described in the "Symptoms" section, click

3. Use the arrows on your keyboard to select Last Known Good Configuration,
and then press ENTER.

Part 2: Manually install the MS04-003 security update
To obtain and install the security update, follow these steps:1. Download
the MS04-003 security update, and then save it on your computer. For
additional information about how to download this update, click the following
article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
832483 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/832483/) MS04-003: Buffer overrun in
an MDAC function could allow code execution
2. Install the MS04-003 security update by running the installation package
with the /T: command-line switch. This switch permits you to specify an
unencrypted location for the installer to extract the package contents to.
For example, to install the English-language version of the MS04-003 security
update for Intel-x86-based computers, and to extract the files to the
C:\alternate_temp folder, type the following at the command prompt:
file_path\ENU_Q832483_MDAC_x86.EXE /T:C:\alternate_temp

Thanks for the info but I have tried Last Known Good Config. With this error
the system will not boot until the MSGINA.DLL file is replaced. Some
solutions suggested that I go to the recovery console, which I did, rename
the file and then restore it from somewhere else. I tried all of that plus
using the repair option and even tried to reinstall xp. The problem is that
the MSGINA file looks like it is so corrupted that it cannot be renamed,
copied, deleted, overlayed, or anything else. Even the reinstall halts with
a message that says that the file cannot be copied.

I was hoping that someone had a solution that would allow me to kill the
file from system32 so that it could be replaced.
