Hello,
I have 2 questions I hope someone can help. I start MSCONFIG and on the
start up tab I have a whole bunch of programs that I don't even have on my
computer anymore. They are not checked but I would like to remove from the
list. Is there a way of doing that?

I have a few programs checked on MSCONFIG. Yet when I start up my computer
sometimes the program icons are in the system tray and sometimes they are
not. I double checked MSCONFIG and I know that they are checked. Yet when I
reboot I do not get all the programs in the system tray. How can I fix this?

Hope someone could help.

This is incorrect, Brian. The use of the -Run type of disabling does not apply to Windows XP. The "disabled" items are stored in:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupfolder
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg

As you can see, there is one key for Startup folder items, and one for items loaded via the Registry.

Don't forget HKEY_CURRENT_USER\.....\Run

There is one way, but it involves editing the Registry. The key may be
different depending on which operating system you use. Basically it goes
something like this:

DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT EDIT THE REGISTRY WITHOUT FIRST BACKING IT UP!!!!

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run for
active apps.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\-Run is where
you'll find the ones you're looking to remove. Just delete the ones you
know you'll never want again from the -Run key. Then reboot.

If you've never edited the Registry before, you may want to look in
Download.Com for a third party application that let's you make these
changes.
