When I check Run > msconfig to clean out programs I don't want to run on
startup there are many listed that I never use. I think I used to be able to
remove these but if so, I've forgotten how. Would appreciate advice on how
to do this. TIA Stan

Simply uncheck the boxes in front of them in MSCONFIG and click OK.

You mean permantently remove those programs from startup (i.e. No longer
listed in msconfig).

That is fairly easy, regedit and choose the run folder and pull the entries
Out that way.

This document gives backup info for the registry:

You can also (if you don't use the programs at all) just uninstall the
programs and leave it at that.

If you're referring to entries you've already unchecked that
you no longer want to have listed in Msconfig do the following:

Go to this web site:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Download and run the script on line 148, right hand side,
"Clear Disabled Items from Msconfig Startup and Selective".

If you prefer to do this manually:
Go to Start -> Run and enter regedit.exe in the Open box. Click
OK.
Navigate to this registry key,

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg

Right click any subkeys and select Delete from the menu. Do the
same for this key,

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupfolder

Good luck

I went to that amazing site and used that tweak. It worked great. Thanks a
million. It's most appreciated. Stan

I know that but what I really wanted was to remove those items from the list
altogether and that was solved by another thread. Thank you for your input.

OK, that wasn't clear to me.

and that was solved by another thread.

Yes, I see that you followed the advice to use Kelly's site. Given the
above, that would have been my next message to you, but I'm glad someone
else steered you there.

Thank you
for your input. Stan

You're welcome.
