hi every1,
I have a small but dangerous problem.my msconfig.exe and
regedit.exe disappear in 5-10sec after running them from RUN window. Also if
i change their names to for eg, regedit.exe to regedit.com then regedit runs
easily and does not disappear, also if msconfig.exe is renamed to
msconfig.com then it does not disappear. But the same does not happen with
Norton Antivirus 2002, it just disappears if i take my mouse to it on the
task bar, also if i double click on its icon on the icon on desktop it opens
the window of registration, when i skip it it shows me the Liveupdate,Full
scan, and another option, when i click on NEXT it justs wait for a few
seconds and disappears.
I have also gone to programfiles>norton>navw32.exe and the main window opens
but then it again disappears. This is bugging me a lot, NAV2002 is not
working.
Also i have uninstalled nav2002 many times and installed again, i deleted
the directories also many times after uninstalling and installed nav2002
again but the same problem again and again, also msconfig.exe, and
regedit.exe giving the same problem too.
what to do now??? my OS is winxp home with service pack1.
I am on 24hrs DSL connection. on an inside machine connected to the main
winxp prof machine which has the main internet ip address.

thanks

MOHIT.

You have a virus. Likely one of the following:

W32.Klez
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

W32.Yaha
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

W32.Spybot.Worm
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.spybot.worm.html

Or a variant of one of them.

For additional help see www.dougknox.com, Win XP Utilities, Create Emergency Copies of Critical XP System Utilities. This small VB Program will create backup, usable copies of Task Manger, Regedit and MSConfig (named Taskmgr1.exe, Regedit.com and MSConfig1.exe) in a new folder C:\EmergencyUtil. Many virus programs will intercept these programs, based on their original file name. The modified file names, allow them to be run. Open Windows Explorer to C:\EmergencyUtil and double click the application you need. The next revision will allow you to browse for the folder you want to place the backups in.

Additionally, see the Win XP Utilities section for Startup Programs Tracker. This small utility scans your system for startup programs and running processes. It also allows you to create a log file that can be copied and pasted into a newsgroup post. The contents of the program window are also copied to the Windows Clipboard, automatically. For replies to newsgroup posts, do NOT include the Running Services, unless its absolutely necessary.
