When trying to access Msconfig or Regedit via Start Menu/Run they just flash
up on the screen or do not start at all. The same with Ctrl/Alt/Del it just
flashes up on the screen and disappears.Any advice on this problem would be
greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Dave.

You probably are infected with a virus. Scan with your current antivirus
using updated definitions (you *do* have one, right?). If you don't
have an av program, go to one of the online virus scanner sites.

I have been having the same problem on an XP Pro system and from
looking at other posts there are more than a few who a runnig into
this. I have been running PC-CILLIN with constant update and the
software did not detect or intercept any virus. I also run the
personal firewall and that also did not track any suspicious activity.

Scans by the PC-Cillin does not find any problems.

The answer about a virus seems logical but none can be found. I
submitted a report to Trend about the problem bu have not gotten any
reply yet. I get alot of email and have a always on DSL connection so
I tend to be pretty careful. The symptoms are simialr to the viruses
described in other posts but these viruses are not found on the
machine.

I just did a windows update and MS has a new critical patch to Directx
that allows an email to forward you to a html site that can do
something bad. The symtoms stated when a funny www site poped up ad I
could not quit the site nor any other programs. I had to do a power
off reboot.

Any further ideas are appreciated.

Hi Dave,

This worm disables NAV, Msconfig, Regedit and Task Manager:
http://www.bitdefender.com/bd/site/virusinfo.php?menu_id=1&v_id=114

And this one:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.spybot.worm.html

Rename regedit.exe to regedit.com then:

Download then Merge the edit on line 251 then delete all the files mentioned
in the above link. http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Try Kelly's tweak at line 251: "restore msconfig, regedit and task
manager"

Hi,

Rename regedit.exe to regedit.com to proceed. If all is well:

EXE Fix for Windows XP - Line 12 (Restores EXE association)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Restore lnk association: (Line 12) Link File Fix for Windows XP
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

To use the Regedits: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.
