MSCONFIG applications clean up

I enter msconfig in the run command box. Once at command screen I opened the
startup tab. I tried to find out about ctfmon. I open IE8 and goggled
'ctfmon' trying to find out in what folders it should be located. I also did
a search. The search revealed it was in 6 folders and they are all in places
where I would expect the file to be. So, where in the Microsoft web site is
this information stored?

The reason for this question is because several weeks ago I had to do a
Non-Destructive restore. But! Thanks to the Almighty and third party
application I have recovered and am about back to normal. I still have
issues, but system is fairly stable.

One issue I have is that when I close down an application Explorer blinks
and starts to recover icons to thier normal display status. While
redisplaying to their normal status explorer goes out to lunch and hangs. I
noticed that the machine is running applications in the background while this
is happening and the system is at 100 %. Once background processing
completes icons continue to recover to orginal state. By this I mean AIM 6
or Microsoft Office Outlook icons look like a windows page not the normal
icons. The Icons look like a web page I assume I it is a standard display
icon if one is not offered. Any suggestions on how to resolve this issue?

I am at SP3, .Net Framework 3.5, XP Home edition - HP 754n. Addition memory
is installed and up to max memory, and disk space on C: drive is around 49 %
with 50 % free. I know that the system idel process always run and is at 99
% most of the time, but release memory when other applications run. Is there
a method that can see what is causing explore to hang? A windows application
preferred?

It's possible that you have a corrupted Icon Cache. Try rebuilding
your icon cache:

Backward Geeker

Here is and update from Backward Geeker. I contacted McAfee via the internet
option. I sent the log error from I got after the system hung. It stated
that McShield ran to long and timed out. McAfee support reviewed the log and
informed me that I had to choose which protection program I wanted to use. I
had MS protection software running and uninstalled it using third party
software called Total Uninstall 5.

It has preformed beyound my expectations and allows me to open any folder so
I can find the product I want to uninstall. I know of no other that have
these feature. Reason is because I had to do a non-destructive restore a
month back and with other packages I could not uninstall various software by
the add/dele panel or the software uninstall package. But one I downloaded
this product I clean my system up to the point where I have 55% free space.

Now back to the update. I uninstalled both protection products. I then
rebooted (Shut Down) PC. Then started back up and installed only McAfee. I
no longer have the time out (High CPU McShield) issue and thank all of you
for your help in this matter.
