In Windows XP Professional with SP2 installed when I try to make changes
using the "msconf.exe" program I get an error on exit that access was
denied...that I may need to logon as an administrator even though have
adminitrator rights. I have seen a lot of chatter on the internet about this
but no real solutions so far. I just installed the XP HOT FIX
KB906569-v2-x86-ENU. It updated the msconfig.exe application as advertised
but I still have the above issue. The msconfig.exe. version is now
5.1.2600.2784.

Hi Jim,
One of two reasons that you have this issue:
1... You have a corrupted profile, so try to create new profile and try the
MSCONFIG command.
How to copy data from a corrupted user profile to a new profile
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811151
2... You have malware on your system, so scan your system and make sure your
computer clean.
If you have a protection software that configured to block any changes to
your system, try to reconfigure to allow you to make changes.
HTH.

nass,

Thanks for the tips. I explored these possibilities with no change in
behavior. It is interesting to note that it happens on both my office tower
and my portable. Dell support says they see this problem a lot. Usually the
changes actually take effect even if you get the message that tells you that
you can't make the change because you do not administrative rights.

I take it msconfig works as expected on your computer. Can you tell me what
version msconfig.exe you are running?

Thanks,

Jim
