msconfig access denied error

Hello,
I recently had a problem installing software for a new printer/scanner (HP
C3180) and called HP for help in resolving the issue. As part of that
exercise I deleted several registry entries as instructed by the HP tech.
There were several problems following that troubleshooting, most of which I
have been able to correct, but one of the remaining problems is that when I
use msconfig.exe to change startup settings, I get a message like this: "An
access denied error occurred............. You may need to log on using an
administrator account......"
Even though I get this warning, the configuration utility seems to do what I
ask it.

I am running XP SP-2, and never really (as far as I know) created an
administrator account. This is a home computer that does not require it to
be configured for multiple users, so an administrator was never defined.

There is one other thing going on that might be related. My system (HP 522n
desktop) will no longer go into hibernation properly. I have it set up to
hibernate after 6 hours in standby. After that time I find the computer
with the hard drive light on and I can hear the hard drive or fan running,
but I do not hear hard drive read/write noises. To get the computer to run,
I need to hold the power switch for a few seconds until the computer shuts
down, and then press the power button again to get it to start. On one of
these startups, I got the black screen saying that Windows had a problem and
offering me choices as what to do; before I could decide which one to
choose, Windows began to start and is now working.

TIA,

Tom

I still have not figured it out, and my system is very unstable seeming to
crash every time it comes out of hibernation or standby. My computer is an
HP model and the HP techs have only managed to make matters worse so far!!!

My advice: if a tech at one of the computer help lines tells you to edit the
registry, make sure you back it up first with a program that can properly
re-write it.
