MSAS name Change Windows Defender

Andre Da Costa

Microsoft AntiSpyware is now Windows Defender:
Microsoft is proud to announce that the final name for Microsoft's Windows
AntiSpyware technology will be Windows® Defender. We believe the name more
accurately describes the protection that we offer to our customers against
spyware and other potentially unwated software and describes it in a more
positive way. We expect Windows® Defender to be included in an upcoming
release of Windows Vista. The engineering team has also been making progress
towards the new signature distribution infrastructure. Windows® Defender
will receive signature updates through the Windows Update infrastructure and
will start appearing on Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) consoles
shortly. The two new additions will be "Definition Updates" in the
classifications and "Windows Defender" in the product categories.

For additional information and relevant discussion on Windows Defender and
other Microsoft anti-malware technologies, please visit the anti-malware
engineering team blog at http://blogs.technet.com/antimalware.

Thanks for forwarding this announcement,

May I ask you 2 questions?
1) Is there any information related to user's switch from beta1 to the final
version?
2) Antyspyware was working fine on non english XP for fluent english users.
Is there any information related to translation (fench should be good for
me)

Thanks for answer (if there are answers),

Jacques

We don't have an answer to question 1, but past beta versions updates have
been semiautomatic--alerts via the application itself, and an offered
automatic download and update which worked for most users. I think that it
is quite possible that this will continue over the beta1/beta2 switch. It
is also possible that there will be a further refresh of beta1, which I
would definitely expect to be done the way the last refresh was--i.e. as
described above.

Beta2, or Defender, will be designed from the start with localization in
mind. I don't know what languages the beta will be released in--typically,
a beta is released in only two or three languages. Once the final product
is released, I would expect it to be localized very broadly--certainly
including several French versions.

So--no clear answers--but I don't see anything to worry about--both these
questions are likely to be as good as or better than our past experience
with this product, I believe.
