MSAS integration

Robert Laughlin

Hi
Ihave been running the MS AntiSpyware program for about 6
months, on 3 computers, with no problems / conflicts
found.

I have a general question though; any thoughts on fully
integrating the Malicious Software Removal Tool, as in
not pulling online webpage and active-x control, but part
of MSAS? Seems a good way of integrating anti-virus
protection without stepping on AV companies toes.

Also, integration within Win XP / Vista Security Centre
(Control Panel) - ie "Firewall, Auto Updates, Virus
Protection, SPYWARE PROTECTION" seems an obvious
extension too.

Sorry for the long rant, and if these topics have been
looked at before.

regards
Robert

Hi Robert:

Well if you noticed the most recent critical updates (8
of'em) from MS The MSR Tool was integrated with them. So
somebody has been thinking along these lines....

Useful thoughts--thanks for posting.

The Malicious Software Removal tool is part of each
months set of security patches via autoupdate or
WindowsUpdate or MicrosoftUpdate. When the tool comes in
via those methods, it has no UI--there may be a license
agreement, and there is a log file left behind -- MRT.LOG
in \windows\debug, I believe.

If something is found, I believe there's more
interaction, but I've never seen such a run, myself.

So--the MSRT is very widely distributed.

Your other request, integration with the Security Center
is one others have made as well. Such a change would
require a change to Windows to provide such an
integration point, and would need to be available to all
antispyware vendors, etc. My suspicion is that such a
change will take a longer term scale--perhaps in Vista,
for example.

Microsoft reads these groups and the suggestions and
critiques here--keep them coming!

Hi Robbie,
The Malicious Software Removal Tool ( I can say it works!) doesn't always
come down automagically with the patches.

I make sure I both run it, and carry a refreshed version on a USB Key.
