MSAS and Counterspy are twins ?

A

Alex

obviously MSAS and Counterspy are cooked in the same
kitchen. Probably Counterspy made MSAS for Microsoft:
what interesing , having MSAS installed and then I install
CS; then uninstall CS and had problem with MSAS: on
start: service gcasDtServ.exe was taking 98% of CPU time
forever, so I had to kill it manually and re-install MSAS.
So probably uninstalling CS, removes something used by
MSAS: I hope Microsoft will take cate of it

Sunbelt claimed that CounterSpy is better than MSAS by having two layers of
definitions:

http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/CounterSpy-FAQ.cfm

Q: Are Microsoft Antispyware and Sunbelt CounterSpy the same product?

A: Both products originated from the same base of code. However, both are
going in their own direction. While they look similar, that outward
similarity will not exist in future versions of either product. CounterSpy
is actively being developed by a world-class team of developers here at
Sunbelt. Our research team is also adding definitions to what Microsoft
sends us. With CounterSpy, you get two layers of definitions: Microsoft's
and then ours.

The difficulties you encountered will be rectified in
future versions of Microsoft Antispyware.

Microsoft purchased the assets of Giant, which originally
produced and sold a well-reviewed product - Giant
Antispyware. Prior to that purchase, Sunbelt licensed
the Giant technology, and was contracted to receive
definition updates through July of 2007.

Microsoft will continue to both provide support and
definitions to Giant Antispyware customers, and provide
definitions to Sunbelt, through the length of the various
contract periods involved. Both Sunbelt and Microsoft
are free to grow and change the product--and likely will!

So--yes, they look alike now. They could be termed
siblings--they have the same parentaage. In the next
iteration, however, the resemblence will probably pretty
well disappear.

I've just suffered the same problem. My CPU is running
at 100% - with gcasDtServ.exe taking 97-98% of the
credit. I can't close MSAS, or uninstall it as the
computer won't let me open any applications from the
control panel. Similarly, none of the functions normally
available through Start / Programmes work. How did
you 'kill it manually'?

Any help gratefully received.

Hit ctrl-alt-delete

Run Task Manager

On the processses tab, select processes beginning with GC or Giant, and
end-task them.

Well, I ran CS after MSAS (it 4 days ago with latest
definitions as of 4 days ago) and CS found 2 extra items
after MSAS clean. Of course it is orbitrary to claim
certain program to be spyware or not ...

-----Original Message-----
What were the two items? Does CS scan for cookies?

I do not remember.
Generally I got involved into this because on my home
laptop (win 2003 server) IE become practically unusable as
result of high level contamination with spyware,
see my HijackThis log at

http://forums.tomcoyote.org/index.php?

so I start using FireFox. Of course, IE as a dominating
web browser is a target. And Microsoft, if wants to keep
IE as is, must protect it(and OS)from contamination. And
this is bad for me as a developer of distributed
applications: my front end based on IE for now; I like
Firefox multitab capabilities but I love IE extended
scripting capabilities. Coming back to spyware: in my case
most effective program was PandaSoftware -> Active Scan

so good luck in developing MSAS; IT IS VITAL to keep IE UP

Thanks--I think we'll see some significant movement on the IE front by late
in the year.
