I just updated Avira AV free, and Java. Now, this file MS149.tmp is trying to
access MANY files (Avira,OE,Service-Host.exe, explorer.exe, HcwSMS.exe,
avshadow.exe, avwebgrd.exe.........)

I can't find anything meaningful about ms149.tmp or this behavior. Anyone have
any clues what thia is?

The files seem to be running processes listed in the windows task manager.

And if you upload this msi49.tmp to virustotal.com,
what does it show ?

If you're infected, good malware blocks access to sites
like virustotal.com (now owned by Google).

You could always give the free version of Malwarebytes MBAM a try.
Or use the offline Kaspersky boot CD to scan for malware.

Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10

General requirements:
--------------------------
480 MB available disk space
CD-ROM/DVD ROM
Internet connection
Computer mouse
Internet Explorer 8.0 and higher
Windows Installer 3.0 and higher

For netbooks:
-------------------
Intel Atom 1.6 GHz processor or a compatible equivalent
Video adapter GMA950 or higher
Screen resolution 800x600 or above

What is the deal about needing IE8 or higher? I think all of my XP
machines have IE7. And needing 800x600 or above kills it for my 800x480
netbooks. Although one could connect them up to an external monitor. I
often have to do this with Linux since Linux doesn't fit the screen with
800x480. Which sort of kills the Linux experience on those netbooks. XP
on the other hand has no problems with 800x480 screens.

I see no such requirements there.

It's a self-booting disc, and does everything
for itself. If it has external dependencies, it
can't have too old a processor (so your K6 processor
would not work - any computing equipment which is
now fossilized would not be a candidate). If your
computer is no more than about 14 years old, the
CD should work. That CD would work on any of my
PCs, even the ones in storage. Because I don't
have a K6 or anything from that generation.
