MS XP Expired Password

Seeking assistance with Logon issue since upgrading from MS 98 to MS XP - I
believe Home Edition.
Problem: a window prompt is stating 'password expired' and asking for old
password first, in order to create new password and proceed. Otherwise
cannot access computer at all.
Is there a way to bypass this prompt? Not sure of old password in order to
complete task. This has never been a problem since upgrading.

We appreciate any help.

Thank you!

Start up in the Safe Mode: Press & hold F8 right after the BIOS post...
Logon as the administrator. There should be no password, just press OK

Right-click My computer, Manage, Local Users and Groups, Users, Right-click Username,
Properties, check "Password Never Expires", "Apply", "OK"
