On an earlier thread it was mentioned that MS Works is NOT part of XP. That
solved part of my problem. When I installed XP, the system was Windows '98.
NOW, my it is '95. How do I go back to the most current word processing
program available. Both the XP and the W'98 are registered to me
Thanks

I don't know what you mean by "was windows 98, my it is '95".

If you upgraded your PC from an older OS to WinXP, you should still have all
your software intact....or should have the CDs to reinstall. If you don't
have Works or Office and want it, you'll need to buy it.

You buy it - office or works or wordperfect - or use one of the free
alternatives like openoffice.

You can buy the current MS Works 8 package and gain access to
to Works' built-in word processor (not Word) and spreadsheet (not
Excel) for about $50.

For another $25-40 bucks, you could elect to buy MS Works Suite 2006
which includes a full-featured MS Word (2002 version), and several
other good programs. In either case, you don't get access to Excel.
The built-in Works spreadsheet is competent, though.

And Word is a spreadsheet too.

Hi Starri

AbiWord is a very nice free word processor with a Word-like look. You
can download it from: http://www.abisource.com/

Hope this helps.

Before I installed XP, my word processor was Windows '98, after the install
it became '95....I would like '98 back.

I think you're confused. Windows 98 and 95 are operating systems, not word
processing software. There's no connection between the two.

Perhaps you're referring to Office 95? There's no Office 98.

BUT where did '98 go? it was there before XP upgrade??

98 *what*? Your post is very confusing. If you had software installed before
the upgrade, and it didn't surivve the upgrade (which I find odd if this was
an upgrade in place), reinstall it from your original media, or buy a new
copy/version of whatever it is you're trying to use, and install it.

Windows 98 is an operating system and has nothing to do with word
processing. No operating system is a word processor.

I guess I am. I have been trying to get this thing working right since 7pm
last night. Worked until about 2am, started again this morning at 8am. Had
corrupt aol files, had a document in my printer that would not cancel, keep
thinking that I had a newer word processor than the Works 4.5 that I keep
seeing, error messages from the printer, etc. Anyway, I reconfigured the
whole mess and now can't get xp to load. About to give up for the day.
Doesn't help that we have the latest and greatest at work. Thanks for your
help, and so sorry to be so confusing in my questions.

No problem - sounds like you just didn't get enough sleep!
Have you considered doing a clean install of XP? Got your data backed up,
got CDs for all the software you want to run? At this point it might be your
best bet. If you aren't comfortable with this, you might find a local guru
(ask around for recommendations) to help you.
