Word MS Word problem

Good morning,
I am using MS XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2 and MS Word 2002.
When ever i click on a MS Word document to open, it always open in notepad and never looks right.
however, if i save the document somewhere, then open MS Word, then open the document it works.
Anyone got any ideas or having the same problem?
This has also happened recently to someone else i know

How is it possible that u are opening a .doc file which turns out to open in notepad? At what location is the original file saved and to which location are u saving the copy of file which is working fine?

I can only suggest to save your data from the file which is working fine and then see if u had done something creepy with the file; like opening it with Notepad....

Change default application to open file types (.doc)

To change the default application which will open .doc files:
Double click on the "My Computer" icon (usually a shortcut on your desktop or click Start, My Computer)
Click "Tools"
Click "Folder Options"
Click the "File Type" tab
Scroll down the list of file types until you reach doc
Click the doc line (to choose the doc file type)
At the bottom of the window, you will see "Opens With"
Click "Change"
Select the Microsoft Word program
Click Apply
Click Close

You may have the 'view' set to web layout, click on the View tab and select print layout
