I use Word 2003. I've seen PDF files where the bookmarks are short sentences
with spaces. Word 2003 prevents me from including spaces. How can I have
spaces?

No, Word doesn't allow you to use spaces in bookmark names. You can use the
underscore character, though: My_bookmark_name_here.

Many thanks for your prompt reply. I have used the underscore character.
However, on reading some PDF files (e.g. the PDF Reference Manual) the
bookmarks shown have no underscore characters, but spaces.

Bookmarked text can be of any length, but Word bookmark names cannot have
spaces. PDF documents have little to do with Word.

I know PDF files are not the same as Word files. However, when I created
bookmarks (with underscores) and then coverted the Word document to a PDF
file, the bookmarks were just as I created them (i.e. with underscores). My
point is that I have read other PDF files where the bookmarks are with
spaces. Am I right in thinking that the PDF files I read were converted from
some other package?

The bookmarks may have been created with Acrobat?

Under some conditions (i.e., given the right settings), Acrobat creates
bookmarks out of headings in Word, so yes, they would have spaces.

There is a difference between *names* of bookmarks and their content, as
Graham and Suzanne have explained. The problem is probably with the
particular PDF converter used. Have you tried using a different application?
