The fact that it does open in safe mode indicates that you have a problem in one
of three areas:
- You may have an incompatible or corrupted add-in.
- You may have a corrupted Normal.dotm template.
- You may have a problem in a registry entry used by Word.

explains how to determine where the problem is and how to fix it. Since it was
written for versions of Word up to 2003, you need to know that the extension of
the Normal template is .dotm, not .dot; otherwise, the steps are the same.
