MS Word 2003

Every time I apply a style to one particular word, MS Word 2003 applies
that style to the whole document. For example, if I highlight one word
and put it in bold or italics, the whole document is then changed to
bold or italics. This can be reversed by clicking the undo button, at
which point only the original word I set in bold or italics is left in
that style. However, I would very much appreciate not having to click
undo everytime I want to change the style of one word or heading. This
is extremely annoying. I have tried turning off Autoformat, but this
does not work. Can anyone help me?
