I'm under the impression that downloading this new Update Rollup 1 will not
lead to unnecessary duplication of Critical Updates if I already have most
of these Updates.
Is this correct?

I keep my OS updated quite religiously and have never seen
or heard of any MS update called Rollup 1. Keep smiling

It is correct - the update will NOT reinstall anything that is up to date -
it will only install what is needed - and your Add/Remove Listing will be a
lot cleaner as well.

You must have a "really" slow connection,
this update was released by microsoft about a week ago, along with 4 other
"critical" updates.

Anyone know if this rollup can be slipstreamed into an installation CD? I'm
about to make a new SP1a slipstreamed disc after stepping on my old one &
snapping it (oopsie) so if the rollup can be included in it that would be
kinda nice :)

I thank you too for that article. Do you know where you can go to get
instructions on slipstreaming SP/1? I had it one time and did it but CD is
now damaged and would like to make another.

Thanks,
Ed.

I don't have the link handy, but if you search on google for "slipstream
XP", you'll find what you are looking for...

In that case, I'll let others see if MS did it right.
"Best laid plans ...."

PS. 6 pots in Update NG as of 10/19 when I did(not) my
manual update.

Just my 2> worth. Larry

Any advise is my attempt to contribute more than I have received but I can only assure you that it works on my PC. GOOD LUCK.

Has MS commented on slipstreaming the rollup? It looks like it should be OK
to do, but I wonder.

It is like an SP1 express, and downloads a lot during installation - I
doubt if this gets to anywhere where you could copy it (unlike most
downloaded updates where it is all an .exe file in Temp Internet Files).
But take a look around.

I tried that Roll Up slipstream and followed instructions and it installed
fine.

But, when I checked like it said"

"If setuperr.log is empty, check %windir%\kb826939.log. If this file exists,
it means update.exe was run but there was a problem running it. Check the
log file for details. If this file does not exist, it means update.exe was
not run. I would recommend trying to manually run update.exe. If it runs
fine then it's probably an error in svcpack.inf or dosnet.inf. If update.exe
gives errors, then you'll know the problem."

It says if is exists update.exe was run but a problem running it. If it
don't exist means update.exe was not run. Mine exists but must be problems.
I had a few fail errors in it but then I checked other KB files in that
folder and the all have the same errors. I checked on computer that I
didn't run the slipstream and only the Windows Update of Roll Up on and same
thing.

Are they saying this folder should exist but be empty?

Anyone else that did the slipstream have the same problem? I don't know if
this install of XP with the slipstream can be trusted or not. Should I feel
safe and continue to use it or just install with my original XP CD and get
the updates?

Thanks,
Ed.

Though I haven't tried it yet, that's my instinct too, at least until MS
puts out something indicating if it's OK to do.

Slipstreaming the SP1[a] CD, or a network download of it, into an
original XP CD is a defined process and should be OK. With this roll up
the difficulty is knowing if it downloaded *everything* to use in the
slipstream. For that reason I'd be very cautious

Thank you for the reply. I think I will just wait to see is going on with
the slipstream as others do it. I did take the full 9 something MB download
of the Roll Up so for that part I should have all of it.

Then you did not get the lot. When I put it on a machine that had only
a few critical updates post SP1 the 'uninstall' folder for it amounted
to 37MB. That's the trouble with the 'express' install (and the same
for that for SP1) - it gets things seen as needed for the particular
machine in its current state, not everything that would be needed for
one that was at nothing since SP1
