It is common knowledge that we are receiving an abundance of 144kb to 157kb
*alleged* Microsoft Messages in our - email.

How long will it be before we receive "Microsoft Updates" that are either:

1. Downloaded and Automatically Installed or
2. Downloaded and ready to be Installed

that are . . . . *not from Microsoft*?

If we cease using "Automatic Updates" and go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com
HOW will we KNOW that we are not being re-directed by some . . freshman in -
high school?

Firewalls? Forget it. Not only have I locked others OUT, I have also locked
myself IN and had to remove the firewall.

US Residents are entitled to the "peaceful and quiet enjoyment" of our
homes. Guess this doesn't apply to the computer situated in our home.

YES! I am paranoid. When I started (WfW 3.11) we used our REAL NAMES and
did not "munge" our address.
Now we have rampant SPAM, Viruses, Trojans and other things I have yet, no
knowledge of.

Now, some of us live in fear. For myself, it would be more humane to move
back to my old neighborhood and be shot and killed at 3:23AM by a house
burglar, than to endure the Internet and the paranoia it generates.

a house burglar, than to endure the Internet and the paranoia it
generates.

And some one or some thing is forcing you to use the Internet?

well duh!

It's called reality that forces us to be vulnerable by
using the internet.

I am much less anxious about it than him ... but am
looking for (and finding) lot's of ways to avoid the bug
trap of MS tools. This is probably my last post ever
using IE (that god! what a piece of garbage!)

You NEED a firewall.
If the firewall locks you in, it is improperly configured.
No firewall may be likened to speeding down a winding icy road without
a seatbelt because it is to confining.

You also need all the Critical Updates.
Between the firewall, updates and antivirus, you drastically cut the
possibility of the things that worry you.
However with out a firewall, you are the cause of the things that
worry you.

When it starts, promptly change your real E-mail address with your ISP for
mail; then setup a fake one for newsgroups.

Life is too short to worry so much about things out of our control. Do
what you can about what you can do something about and let the rest go.
There are always dangers and risks, even just getting out of bed in the
morning.

Technology is not a panacea and never will be.

StarTrek and they probably won't in our lifetimes.

All Microsoft updates come from Microsoft servers that YOU
go to.

Microsoft does not email with attachments/patches. You can
sign up for a notification service but that seems really
silly since you should be checking "on your own" at least
once a week by clicking the Windows Update button on the
Start menu.

The Constitution does not protect you from anything except
the government and that is often questionable. The
government thinks that "shall not" is a challenge and not a
prohibition.

My advice to you would be...

Move back to your old house and please get shot

Either that, or stop using the internet...
