MS sans serif and MS serif as a default font for web viewers

I have only ever used just basic Times New Roman and Arial Fonts on my webs.
Except when I want a title, for instance, to be a font that many users might
not have on their machines, I will save it to a GIF, showing it as a
picture.

Both TNR and Arial really cram the letters and rows together. Without
getting into Style Sheets, what would happen if I just selected my default
font as MS sans serif? or MS serif? I just changed a paragraph with Arial
font to MS sans serif and it just relaxed the whole paragraph, as though it
could breath?

Can I assume anybody using Windows will view web pages with MS sans serif
or MS serif automatically if I use it as my default font?

And if there are Mac viewers, do you know if that type of a windows font
will carry over to match up with an equivalent font?

What will happen? Probably nothing. Those defaults do nothing to the code
on the page - only to how the code looks in your preview.

To make the default really be any font, you would have to add a stylesheet
to your page (either linked or embedded) that contained those default
styles. Depending on whether your page has a valid and complete doctype,
you could be more or less verbose with this stylesheet....

Okay, I see that the key words for a style sheet are "linked" or "embedded"
so maybe I'll go that way. I have never seen my webs from someone else's
computer. Wonder what they're seeing?
