ms dos

Why would you want to do this? WinXP does not have MS-DOS. Also,
although you can start Ms-DOS using Win98 or WinME start-up disk, you
will not be able to access anything on the HD drive if it is formatted
as NTFS.

So tell us what do you want to do as you can perhaps do it in command
prompt.

i want to take xp off my old computer and put 98 back on, but it wont boot up to windows anymore, ive tried making a boot disk but it doesnt work

You have to ensure that you make a Windows 98 boot diskette, not an MS-DOS
start-up diskette, and that the boot order in your computer BIOS is set to
boot from floppy first..

For boot diskette images, go to http://www.bootdisk.com

Instructions for getting into BIOS to change the boot order varies from make
to make.. more info is required from you..

Not to put too fine a point on it, you don't.

There is no way to reboot a WinXP PC into Real Mode DOS unless
you've set up a dual-boot system. The WinNT family of 32-bit graphical
operating systems, of which WinXP is the latest generation, has never
used, included, or "ridden upon" MS-DOS. The Recovery Console's CLI
(Command Line Interface) is the closest you can come to the old "DOS
mode." What, precisely, are you trying to accomplish?
