Windows XP doesn't have MSDOS, what you are seeing is command mode. It looks
like MSDos and shares some of the syntax of MSDOS but under the skin is a
completely rewritten text command based addition, specificly created for 32
bit Windows. It therefore is perhaps not surprising that a program for MSDOS
does not work properly. You can run DOS programs in a number of ways. 1) Set
up your system to dual boot. This means as the PC starts you will be
presented with a menu where you select either Windows XP or Dos as your
operating system. The other approach which is much better should you be
prepared to spend some money, is to run Microsoft Virtual PC. This is
software that creates a virtual computer on your XP host machine. The
virtual computer emulates everything inside a real computer, graphics card,
network, hard drive controllers etc This is completely invisible to the end
user. The clever bit is you can load operating systems onto as many virtual
machines as you care to create. So in your case you could have a virtual
machine running MSDos running within windows XP. It all sounds pretty
complicated but actually isn't when implemented. Another advantage is the
virtual pc can have any type of formating ie FAT, FAT32, NTFS. The only
downside to all this is the operating system can seem sluggish because of
the enormous amount of processing going on. I have a virtual machine running
XPServer 2003 on a 3GHZ system and it runs at about half the speed you might
expect. With MSDOs or Win98 that won't be a problem as those are not cpu
intensive operating systems. Microsoft has a 30 day trial of Virtual PC 2004
should you be interested.
