IMO. YMMV. MS is currently involved in pleading its case that it is a
benign [sic] monopoly to the EU. If MS looses its case that despite
what is plain to everyone that MS is in fact a predatory monopoly it
should continue to operate under the premise of being a benign monopoly
(i.e., the "ignore the elephant in the living room" theory), it will be
required to unbundle at least WMP. Since third parties (i.e., in MS's
view, developers of competing products who are undermining the spirit of
innovation [sic] ) offer messaging applications, the inclusion of
Windows Messenger in Windows can possibly [sic] be viewed as another
predatory MS practice. My guess is that WM is on hold pending
resolution of the EU's monopoly practices case. If the EU upholds
previous court decisions, then Windows Lite stripped of at least WMP and
quite possibly several other currently bundled apps might be the result.
You can make your own list of apps the are "included as integral parts
of the Windows Operating System that offer a unique and fulfilling user
experience" that might go missing with WMP.
