MS-Access backups when the .ldb file exists

Hi everyone,

I am using an MS-Access in a mutli-user environment, and I was wondering
whether it is safe to backup the MS-Access data files by simply copying them,
even when the associated .ldb files exist.

The presence of the .ldb files mean that the database is being accessed by a
user, and I would hate to somehow corrupt the data files by copying them.

Thanks.

No, it may not be safe. The copy could be in an inconsistent state.

i've been making backups while the .ldb exists for about a month now and no
problems yet, but i'm kind of concerned about corruption too. but, i'm more
concerned about losing valuable data. lesser of 2 evils kind of thing.

anybody else know what's up?

thanks,
kamal
p.s. you can set up automatic backups by creating a batch file and having
windows run it a few times a day. let me know if you need to know how.

I suppose that would be the other question - whether any changes that are
being made to a specific record at the time of the backup will be lost in
that backup only, and be captured in the following backup, or whether they
will be permanently lost.

FMS claims that their Total Visual Agent software can safely backup a file while users are in it.
This is probably the safest route to go, if you really need to make backups while other users are
in the database.
