And what might the Incredimail email notifier DO?
(Most sane people consider Incredimail to be bordering on a virus, rather
like AOL...)

Incredimail is a email program which incorporates a "new email notifier"
advisement on your screen when a new email is being received, with or without
sound.

yes I know what Incredimail is......a blight on the email world.
Outlook 2007 also has a notifier built in that does sound and a visual
message.
Do Tools-Email options-Advanced Email options.
You did try Outlook HELP first?
