mpg to CD to play on DVD player

Debbie

I have some MPG files that I would like to burn onto a CD to watch on
my TV using my DVD player.

My DVD player will play VCD files but what would be the best way to
convert the MPG to VCD?

I have the program "All video converter" but all it will do is MPG to
AVI. What program would be best to use. Also how would you create
the menu on the CD to pick the show you want to watch?

These files are in the 200+ size range right now. Not sure if they
will be larger or smaller after converting to the VCD.

Thanks for any help in advance,
Debbie

I have the same question. I can make a movie and play it on my computer but cannot play it on my dvd player. I have tried different cd brands and dvd+rw and nothing works. If you find the answer please let me know. I am getting very frustrated at this point.
Thank you

Sounds good but I just used the "All Video Converter" program and
converted the .MPG to AVI(Divx etc) (is how it was listed) and it took
about 5 hrs. The MPG file was 217meg and after converting the AVI
ended up being 1.06gb.

I am download some other shows that are in MPG format in the 200meg
range but one of the same show is an AVI and it is only about 90meg.

Did I do something wrong.

Thanks,
Debbie

First off, you don't actually convert from MPG to VCD. VCD is a way
that MPG files are stored on a CD for playback in a DVD player.

What you need is a disk authoring program that will make the VCD disk
for you.

If the files are MPEG-1, you can make a VCD. If they are MPEG-2, you
can make an SVCD.

I use VCDEasy from <www.vcdeasy.com>. They have a free trial version
that limits you to two video files and four pictures per disk. It's a
solid program; does what it's supposed to do and the author is really
good with support. And, it's only $20 to buy.

You will be interested in the PBC (PlayBack Control) or Interactivity
function to create a menu. WARNING ... this is not a "wizard"
program. You will probably need to create a JPG (or a short video if
you are feeling creative)with your menu and then tell VCDEasy what to
do when a button is pushed. There are great tutorials on the site and
at <www.dvdrhelp.com> (go to "tools" on the left side of the page and
search for VCDEasy).

Good luck. Making VCDs and SVCDs is fun since you can burn at 52x
speeds and CD-R media is almost free.

OK, I don't think that's going to fit on a CD-R... :0)
I will have to just put about 3 episodes on each CD then and just
watch them on my PC.

Thanks,

When you burn a MPEG-1 file that is about 250mg to VCD. Will it
compress to a smaller size to where I would be able to get maybe 4
files per CD-R instead of 3 files?

Thanks,

(the server glitched so I don't think my first post went through)
(sorry if this is a duplicate answer)

No, the file will not get smaller when you burn it to an VCD. You can
make it smaller by re-encoding it beforehand, but you will lose
quality. There is lots of information about this at www.dvdrhelp.com

There is a chance that your file will actually get BIGGER when burned
to the disk. That is because some MPEG encoders do not properly fill
the frame data and VCDEasy has to "pad" it to make it compliant with
the standard that DVD players expect. VCDEasy will warn you about
this and will give you a good estimate of the space availabe as you
add each file.

I messed up the link yesterday. VCDEasy is at <www.vcdeasy.org> and
not at .com
