mpg Playing Problems PPT 2002

I have what appears to be a new variation on an old theme. I cannot see mpg
movies in a presentation play under PPT 2002 while they are playing. The
presentation previously ran perfectly and still does on a Windows 2000
machine but when it was moved to a new Sony laptop running Windows XP and
another Sony Laptop running Windows 2000 although the initial mpg frame can
be clearly seen in the slide, when it starts to play the frame turns white
and although the mpg file is playing nothing can be seen. Old PPT
presentations on the same laptops using the same mpg files have also
developed the same problem. It is not a virus causing this or a corrupt mpg
file. The file associations are correct and the mpg file can be played
perfectly with mplayer and mplay32. and Media Player 9 although i realise
the latter has nothing to do with mpg files playing in PPT. The
presentation was created in PPT 2002 and previously ran OK on both laptops
which automatically obtain the latest Windows updates. I have associated
the mpg files under Windows on both machines with the mplayer.exe or
mplay32.exe program but nothing has changed. I have checked the MCI
associations in the registry and they are ok. I suspect it may be an upgrade
of Windows that has caused this but has anyone any ideas how to solve it?

Try extracting those files and making them .avi
files...then re-insert them.

Thanks for the suggestion and I will give it a try but I haven't used avi
format in the past because the movie clips I use do not display very well as
an avi file. I will try and see what happens but I would really like to
solve the original problem if possible.

I have the very same problem, but with AVIs that are encoded with microsoft
codecs (ms-rle, ms-cram). You can see my post if you want. To solve the
problem (which remains a mistery) I had to recapture the video file with
video capture software (it's stupid but it works). I have used hypercam
because my movies contain sounds. If not there is also snagit that works
great. Unfortunatly I have no clue what generates the problem in the first
place. Maybe the same codec (e.g., ms-rle) behaves differently on different
machines...

hope this helps,
