mpg clip won't play

Howdy All:

I have PowerPoint 2003. I have cut some mpg clips that run perfectly with
windows media player. When I try to put them into my PowerPoint, they will
not play. I can put a different mpg clip (made at a different time) in and
it will play fine. Any thoughts?

Thanks

Is it MPG 1 or 2?
What is the size of the file (both in pixels and MB)?
These nuggets of info could hold the key...

Randi,

In all probability you have a codec issue. That is the codec to play the
video is not available to the Windows MCI media player (used by PowerPoint).
You can use a utility like GSpot to examine the video file and determine the
codec required, locate it on the internet (in most cases) and then down load
and install it.

As an alternative you might want to give PFCMedia a try (trial download
www.pfcmedia.com) as it will do all of this automatically for you and put
the video file into a format compatible with PowerPoint. The advantage is
that once completed the presentation will play properly on just about any
Windows machine with PowerPoint or the PowerPoint viewers.

Huh? GSpot gives you a lot more information than that. Did you click
"Render" near the bottom of the screen?

Here's the work-around I just did. I Re-did all my scenes in "studio 9" and
created .avi files. Then, in Windows MovieMaker I imported the .avi files in
and made wmv files from each scene -- they play -- and a bit off with sounds
sync (but I guess nothing's perfect?!) If anyone has other thoughts without
me having to spend $50, I'd appreciate it!

Thanks for all the comments!

Windows Media Encoder
(http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/encoder/default.aspx)
can convert mpg files to wmv files. It might better serve your purpose (and
is a free download).

You do not need to spend a penny on PFCMedia, it is a FULLY functioning demo
for 14 days. But hey, if your alternative worked and you are happy with the
results, good on ya! <g>

Movie Maker is not compatible with MPEG file types especially MPEG2 which
dont work at all. MPEG1 sometimes work and other times wont. its best to
either produce AVIs as you did or convert the MPEGs to AVI (e.g. using
VirtualDubMod) if you cant produce from source.

The AVI you produce should be high quality format such as DV or Uncompressed
RGB.

As everybody else has proven there are quite a few ways to convert your MPG
files to AVI that won't cost a dime. If you prefer to do your own research
into the software you would prefer check out this site for pretty much any
conversions you could need:

Absolutely, lots of great sites out there for those wanting to learn and do
more with multimedia in PowerPoint. I also highly recommend two free tools,
GSpot and MMVIEW to anyone working with PowerPoint and multimedia. (A quick
Google search for either will give you lots of links.)
