Got over a half a Gb of MP4 video files. Media Player Classic can't
play them, Window$ Media Player can't either, at least not here. What
free software can? (no, it isn't porn).

What you probably need is the correct codec - once you get this, MPC and
WMP will probably both be able to play the files.
A lot of video files are encoded using DIVX or XVID, and these codecs can
both play other generic MPG4 formats, as well (
http://www.divx.com,
http://www.xvid.org).
Some may use MPG2 encoding if they came from DVD, and you could use
something like WinDVD or PowerDVD - I don't think either of these is
free, but they come bundled with a lot of DVD drives. I wouldn't be
surprised if there is a free codec for this somewhere, as well. If they
are MPG2, half a Gb is probably not a very long movie - MPG2 doesn't
compress nearly as much as some other codecs.
There are places where you can download "codec packs" that install an
assortment of codecs - you often get a bunch that you don't really need
this way, though.
You may also need a new audio codec as well - video files often use MP3
audio encoding - this should be included in most "modern" operating
systems. If the files came from DVD originally, they may use AC3 audio
(try
http://ac3filter.sourceforge.net).
If MPC or WMP won't tell you what codec is required, you could get
something like GSPOT or AVICODEC, which should.
If you want to know where any of the above are, or more info, try Google.
