Hyperlinks for video files

Using Tools > Folder Options from an Explorer window I can associate MP4
video files in XP with various programs. Such as Windows Media Player,
Media Player Classic, VLC, etc. D-clicking or using Open With then plays
these video files as you'd expect.

But when I then try to open a hyperlink to such a file in Excel 2000, I
get the rather unhelpful message "An unexpected error has occurred."

So far this seems to be confined to MP4 types. MPG work OK. What is the
likely explanation please? Are MP4s perhaps outside Excel 2000's scope?

Anyone with Excel 2000 able to test a hyperlink to an MP4 please?

I posted in one of the video forums and an Excel 2003 user had no such
problem. But I'd like to eliminate the possibility that my issue is a
limitation of my older version.

Never did get any response on the above. Seems to be some sort of general
bug because I have had the same problem with other file types: TXT and IFO
(DVD file). From a Windows folder, both open correctly in their respective
associated programs, but Excel 2000 gives that darned error ;-(
