Are there any small free apps out there that can remove hisses and gaps from
MP3 files?

you will need the lame dll to handle mp3 files with audacity..

you plave it in the audacity folder..

Not without decoding to wave, editing the wave and then re-encoding. Most
any wave editor can do that.

There used to be a non-free one named "Mayah" that purported to edit MP3s
directly but it was a POS. IMO, YMMV.

Just thought of another exception...MP3DirectCut. Wouldn't do hiss though.
