mp3 conversion now that dbPoweramp has gone payway?

Hi,

Any good free converters out there that are comparable to the dbPoweramp
one where you now have to pay for mp3 conversion?

What I really like about dbPoweramp is the simplicity of it and the great
shell integration. Guess dbPoweramp is the best one in this respect?

Winamp - itself Freeware from http://www.winamp.com has a plugin (also
Freeware) which allows any file played to be written to disk as mp3 instead
of output to the speaker. The plugin is also available from the above site.

Use the LAME encoder for MP3s.

it seems (to me anyway) if you use the lame.exe rather than the lame.dll it
will convert just fine. Maybe I'm just lucky.

Winamp does a lousy job of converting MP3s. The highest bitrate is only
56K.

The recommendation of one of the moderators at dbpoweramp is to either
use the version 10 or to just add your own mp3 plugin. I found the
version 10 perfect for my needs so I keep using it. But adding lame
yourself is no different then downloading a plugin for any other converter.
There's still nothing better then dbpoweramp.
