http://maccc.filenabber.com

About: MP3 Automagic CD Cover Creator (MACCC) creates printable CD
covers (inserts, frontcards, traycards, etc.) for MP3 CDs (front and
back for full-size cases, front-only for slimline). These covers are
great for use with in-dash car MP3 CD players. The covers it outputs are
in CDInsert format, CDRLabel format, HTML, and .txt format. MACCC is
freeware.

Changes in version 0.95: The "Remove Track Numbers" option is now
independent of the ID3 tag/filename selection. Checking for updates is
now optional. "Remove this text from selected MP3s" feature has been
added. New icons were added. A splash screen was added. The GUI was
cleaned up. An error which occurred when no files were selected was
fixed. Tooltips were added to everything. MACCC is now fully
internationalized and ready for translations.

Is there a non Java version to it ? or a non-java program that can make
covers for mp3 Cds ?

Nope. It's a freeware Java application. Why the aversion to Java? (just
curious)

The only ones that I have found that were even close to what I wanted
(and these still don't quite cut it for me) are CDRLabel
(http://www.cdrlabel.com) (NOT freeware) and CDInsert
(http://www.aczone.com/tools/cdinsert/form.html) (freeware). MACCC works
with both of these and makes the MP3 covers look great (IMHO).

What do other people use for their MP3 CD Covers?

I'm not sure why some folks don't like java apps. I've tried this one and
like it :) If it does what it's supposed to do, I don't care what code is
used.

The free version is only a viewer and unless I'm missing something, as
such is pretty much worthless:

If you're recommending one of the versions that cost money, then
you're off topic in the alt.comp.freeware group into which you have
crossposted your reply. That group is supposed to be for the
discussion of freeware. Please be sure to check where you're sending
your messages.

:) So, what format do you use? CDRLabel? CDInsert? Just curious as to
how people are using it. Email me offline if you want. (or post in
http://forums.filanbber.com)

Brian,
I would use the straight text since output since one format (.clbx)
seems to be proprietary to that shareware program, and I don't use
shareware as a rule.
Another way of using the output is to submit the list (the
"mp3cd-cdinsert.txt" output) to that online service you recommend. A
warning to those who pirate .mp3s: bear in mind that you are
voluntarily giving information to people you don't know (and a WHOIS
doesn't provide much about this site). That information could easily
be going straight to the RIAA. It could very easily be a sort of
"honeypot". JMO.
Since I don't make .mp3 CDs, I thought I'd look into what would be
necessary for using your program's text file output. It appears that a
lot of CD cover creation programs only use graphics files that you
create or download from the internet (another risky thing to do). It
isn't easy to find one that uses text output. However, here are a few
programs I found that might be able to do this:

Label Creator 4000 Special Edition:

http://www.survivorx.com/download.php

Capas (installs with default Portuguese interface, but can be changed
to English by clicking the "Ajuda" menu, choosing "Parametros" and
selecting English):

http://www.terravista.pt/guincho/1108/software.html

CoverPrint 1.0:

http://www.greger.nu/greger_program_vb-en.htm

CD Book:

http://www.spiritone.com/~enegus/

CoverCreator:

http://www.xs4all.nl/~reneslkh/covercreator/index.html

And I'm sure there are others, but I'm tired of looking.

A caveat: I haven't installed or used any of these programs, so their
suitability for this application (using text files to make CD jewel
case covers) is an unknown. I also don't know if any of them are
adware or have any other hidden bugaboos; I'm only trusting the
various websites' assertions that they are freeware.

A few suggestions for *your* program though:

1. (And I do mean *number 1*) Your program immediately tried to call
home to "look for a newer version". Since I hadn't yet run the program
and had a chance to turn off autoupdate in options, it's a good thing
that I had the foresight to have my firewall set to stop all traffic.
You might want to consider making autoupdate something that is turned
off by default. I *never ever* allow a program to autoupdate, even AV
programs. JMO.

2. I just tried out your program and notice that you don't include a
help file. This can be a real problem for some people and I recommend
that you think about including one. Your suggestion that people post
questions to that online forum leaves out those who don't have
internet access, and believe me, there are lots of people like that
out there. At least make the readme.txt file accessible via the help
menu item. It's better than nothing.

3. I won't say anything about the fact that you have chosen to write
your program in Java except that it's very inconvenient for the casual
end user, most of whom run Windows systems.

4. You might want to consider losing the splash screen or at least
making it optional. Whenever a program has a splash screen and there's
another similar program without a splash screen available, I'll always
opt for the non-splash screen program. Splash screens simply serve to
slow down program startup and are a time-wasting annoyance to most people.

Yeah - I'm in the process of setting that same thing up on my server. Of
course, you don't know me either, so it probably won't alleviate your
fears :) If you have access to a unix box, you can setup the CDInsert
stuff and do it yourself.

You obviously aren't using the latest version :) In the latest version,
the auto-checking for update is is an option that you can turn on or off
:) It's on the MP3 configuration tab at the very bottom. It's on by default.
I *never ever* allow a program to autoupdate, even AV
programs. JMO.
It just looks to see if there is a newer version and if so, it alerts
you with a message box with a clickable link to visit the site. It
doesn't auto-update. You have to click to go get it, download it, and
install it.
2. I just tried out your program and notice that you don't include a

Yep - that's on my TODO list. Actually, I'm in the process of writing a
configuration wizard that will make the configuration much easier to
understand.
4. You might want to consider losing the splash screen or at least
making it optional.
It's a 3-second splash screen and it will go away immediately if you
click on it.

Thanks for the feedback!

I'm using ver. 0.95. Is that the latest? I downloaded and installed
your program yesterday.

As I said though, JMO. Other people may feel differently. I don't do
autoupdate even with (or better yet, *especially with*) the Windows OS.

Well, to be fair, your program is exceedingly easy to use already.
However, due to the wording in your OP, I expected to actually be able
to print CD labels directly from your program. From what I've seen, I
really can't do this without help from other programs. What your
program seems to do is to create *lists* that can be cut and pasted,
or opened into other programs so that the covers can be printed. Not a
big deal because your program does a great job of compiling the
information in the first place.
It's a 3-second splash screen and it will go away immediately if you
click on it.

I know, but my criticism stands. For an example of how popular splash
screens are, see this link:

http://makeashorterlink.com/?X28115E26

(goes to a search page result list in Google.)

Thanks for a great program though.
