Moving XP hard drive to new machine - Repair Installation?

J

John Kerr

I bought a new Pentium IV several months back, with Windows XP Pro
installed onto it. The Windows XP Pro is an OEM version, with
a "System CD" and a "Recovery CD", so that I did not get a
real verison of Windows XP on CD.

A lot of things (a whole intranet) has been installed and configured
on that CD since then.

I wish to now move this hard drive to an older machine (Pentium II
266 Mhz to be exact, and a totally different brand) that's not exactly
too far above the 'minimum' system requirements for Win XP Pro but I
hope that'll be enough??

I'm not worried about having to 're-activate' Windows XP Pro on
the new machine (given that the hardware is totally different) -
I think that will be doable.

What I *am* concerned about is whether the Windows XP itself will
actually work properly on the machine that the hard drive will be
migrated to - Will it hang? Crash?

From my research, I've seems that I can expect it not at least
not boot up properly, and an oft-quoted way to solve that is
to go to 'reinstall' XP on that hard drive but choosing the
Repair option, i.e. do a repair installation.
e.g. that's mentioned at these two URLs:

I believe that I need a 'real' Windows XP Professional cd for that,
which I didn't get with the computer, as I wrote above.
Then I remembered that I of course have my own Win XP CD at home.

I think all the CDs are service pack 1 (but not 100% sure).

All these CDs are legitimate originals, so will it work if I
do a 'repair installation' on my hard drive with my own home CD?
(which of course isn't the same CD with which Windows XP was installed
on the hard drive in the first place.)
Or am I playing with fire here? Would some other method be better?

Microsoft KB article 314070 (support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314070)
is supposed to provide info on how to go about "Moving XP to
different hardware", but I can't find that particular article
on Microsoft's site at all (I can find all others) - has this one
been superseded by something else?
