Moving Vista from one machine to another by imaging

Q

Qu0ll

I need to move my Vista installation from one machine to another and I am
hoping that I can do it by simply creating an Acronis True Image image on
one machine and then installing it on the other. However, the machines have
very different configurations, most notably the disk subsystem: U320 SCSI
RAID on the current machine and SATA II RAID on the new machine.

Will this work or will I need to do a fresh install on the new machine? The
thing is, I have spent over a year getting all the settings of all programs
just right and I don't want to start from scratch again.

Sorry, but you can't do it.
The image that you want to create, and install on another computer, would
have all the hardware settings/configurations from where it is NOW installed.

Clean install is your only option.

Cheers.

Even if you could install the image, you would have to run a Vista repair
install before the other machine would boot, and you would have to activate
by phone.

OK, thanks Mick. I guessed that would be the case. So I will do a clean
install and then run Easy Transfer in the hope it will transfer all my
settings.

Quoll,we all have different ideas! I've never been a Easy Transfer fan.

I prefer to copy Data to CD, memory stick, external drive, and manually do
my settings.
You have to also reinstall all your programs you installed from the original
Media(disk or downloads) on the new comp; Easy Transfer won't transfer them.
You have to redo the settings there too, as you can't transfer programs via
East transfer.
When you installed the programs on your old comp, parts were sent to various
spots, like registry, etc.

I know that I need to install all applications on the new machine but I was
under the impression that I could use Easy Transfer to transfer all the
registry settings (and any other settings) from the old machine once the new
machine has everything installed. Fortunately, I will be able to have both
the old and new machines on a LAN at the same time.

You will need to re-install Vista as the hardware will be different on the
new machine.
