I've just launched my new Web site, Jimco Books, at
www.jimcobooks.com. The site will include articles to supplement my
book releasing soon.

The first article details how to move from FrontPage to Expression
Web, so if you're interested in seeing what's in store should you
choose to upgrade, check it out.

Thanks for the link Jim!

Question for people developing locally, EW comes with something called an
ASP.NET Developer Server (I think that's the right name) that needs to be
installed with the .NET 2.0 Framework before EW is installed. This is
according to the readme file I got yesterday.

I just downloaded EW yesterday and haven't had a chance to install it yet
but if people are already running Windows XP (or 2000 or 2003) with IIS
installed why would they need this since IIS supports .NET? Will the setup
ignore that if IIS is installed?

Good question.

The ASP.NET Development Server is used for testing ASP.NET pages (or
HTML pages) in a disk-based Web site. ASP.NET will obviously not work
when browsed from a disk path, so the ASP.NET Development Server
launches and maps itself to the disk path of the Web site. Pages are
then browsed automatically at http://localhost on a random port.

If you have IIS installed (5.1 on XP, 6 on Win2003, or 7 on Vista),
you don't need to use the ASP.NET Development Server as long as the
Web site is a server-based Web site.

Incidentally, the ASP.NET Development Server does not serve legacy ASP
pages. Server-side code must be ASP.NET.

Thanks Jim! So then I can skip that step during set up since I don't do
disk-based webs right (I'd rather not installed extra stuff if I don't need
it)? Does it support just the 2.0 framework or earlier versions as well?

It supports only the 2.0 Framework. The ASP.NET Dev Server is part of
the .NET Framework 2.0 install, so if you plan on building ASP.NET
apps, it's going to get installed. But it's just a couple of files.

Hi Jim!

Great news on the book! I will probably eventually make the switcheroo
next summer. Will there be any significant differences in the book from the
Beta version to the final?

I bought your Frontpage 2003 book this year. It rocks!!!

cheers,

Petey Forrest

Hi, Petey. I really appreciate the comments on the 2003 book.

The EW book has gone through stringent review as EW progressed.
Feature lockdown on EW was a while back, so we've been comfortable
with the state of the book for some time. Still, we've diligently been
working to review both content and screen shots so that everything you
see reflects the final product.

My final review of all chapters is still ongoing and I am reviewing
against the finished copy in PDF format. This will be the fifth review
by me and by editors, so no worries.

By the way, make sure you pay attention to the free software on the
CD. One of those products is worth the price of the book. :)

Hi Jim,

Good to know! Your attention to detail is appreciated by many. Your books
are a class act. I like how you included the PDF of the entire FrontPage
2003 book on the accompanying CD. Great for searching!

Though, I mainly bought the FrontPage book to explain the details I missed
concerning FrontPage extensions (which I don't use), but your
troubleshooting sections were bang on. I host my hobby web sites on a UNIX
server, so I like to know what I should and shouldn't use. I've loved
FrontPage (since FP97), but Expression seems to be the next logical step for
me when next summer rolls around. hehe

cheers,

Petey Forrest
