I have a friend who is getting a new PC. He has several drawing programs on
his old 98 machine that he wants moved to the new XP machine. Can I just
copy those files to an external drive and move them to the XP machine?

Very unlikely, they would need to install these apps from origonal
installation media on the new PC.
As to whether they would work under winxp is a different matter.

Download the XP Upgrade Advisor from Microsoft and run it on the 98 machine.
It will give you a comprehensive, printable file of what the XP software can
or cannot run with. It is at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/upgrading/advisor.mspx
You may be able to obtain "drivers" for XP for the software concerned, but
it does depend on what the advisor comes up with.

Hi,
Well really sorry to say.. thats not possible.. applications have to be
reinstalled and cant be merely copy-pasted as many componets have to be
registered internally.. Also Win88 architecture is differennt from WinXP
architecture so the program files could also be of different versions.. SO I
suggest u reinstall.. Do copy the drawings which ur friend made..

Yes, I agree that many applications may not transfer. All I am saying is
that the Wizard will actually tell you what XP can and cannot deal with,
before you actually try load the XP upgrade.
